Robin Givhan/Fashion Pulitzer Prize Winner-Kansas City Central Public Library

Monday, December 9, 2013

Hi readers!

I was excited a few photos with you after attending the event for Robin Givhan. Here is a little description about the event from (Source: KC Library Robin Givhan). I was really nervous to meet her and I was even more nervous on how to dress for her. I have determined after meeting Ms. Givhan that she prefers to wear: a little black dress, her intellectual pair of glasses, and a pair of signature/designer shoes.

Givhan discusses the nexus of fashion and politics with Time magazine editor-at-large David Von Drehle in When Fashion Meets Power, the sixth and final 2013 presentation in the Library’s series Dateline: Washington with David Von Drehle, which provides an insider’s look at key issues in Washington, D.C., through the eyes of America’s top journalists.
Robin Givhan never planned to write fashion criticism.
“I don’t know of any fashion writer — working for a newspaper, anyway — for whom becoming a fashion writer was their ultimate goal,” she says.
“People who are passionately interested in fashion go directly to fashion magazines.
“My first love was writing and journalism. I wanted to be a newspaper writer. I fell into fashion almost by happenstance.”
Obviously it was more than mere happenstance that led to Givhan winning the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for criticism for her fashion coverage inThe Washington Post. The award committee cited her “witty, closely observed essays that transform fashion criticism into cultural criticism.”
Dateline Washington: When Fashion Meets Power
Thursday, December 5, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. at theCentral Library, 14 W. 10th St.
6 p.m. reception precedes the event. Free parking is available at the Library District Parking Garage at 10th & Baltimore.
RSVP online or call 816.701.3407
Told by an interviewer that he was in awe of her Pulitzer Prize, Givhan laughs and replies, “I know. I’m in awe of it, too!”
I was determined to ask a question so I was one of the lucky six people that were able to ask her a question at the end of the evening. I asked "With disposable fashion these days do you have a signature piece of clothing/fashion that you wouldn't give up and love?" She didn't really answer it directly but let me know that she doesn't prefer the term disposable fashion and does like to invest in higher quality pieces.

These public events are funny because people either want to talk about their "fashion or business" instead of sticking to just a question; people are also quick to flatter a speaker. I don't know how many times that night people spoke about her winning the only Pulitzer Prize ever for a fashion writer. Please, don't get me wrong, that is an amazing accomplishment but after hearing it ten times I got the point.

Enjoy the few photos I was able to sneak during the night and I am excited to attend more fashionable events in Kansas City. (Even if the weather was less than perfect)

Chanté Gossett-Fashion Show 2013

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

Hi readers,

I have been busy working my full-time job but here are the photos from Chanté Gossett's fashion show. I have been talking to Chanté about doing another full feature on her as a designer as well as more photos soon.

Her fashion show was really one of the first I've seen in Kansas City so well executed; from the Ipads on the table with her website, from the craftsmanship of her garments, to the step and repeat, the cocktail menu, music, and staffing of the event. Great job Chanté! (I want to cut my hair short like pronto)

I have lots of fun upcoming events and can't wait to share them with you. Please keep staying tuned and if you haven't yet please go to my Facebook page and like JADATO! https://www.facebook.com/jadato.net

My outfit is: Vintage Silk Diane Von Furstenburg Shirt, Vintage Dooney and Burke purse, Vintage Gold Earrings, Banana Republic Black Shirt, and Moda Satin Pumps

Wearable Tech: CFDA USB Bracelets

Friday, November 15, 2013

Readers!

I was looking on E-bay for Christmas gifts and came upon these tech bracelets. They have been on sale since November 11, proceeds of the sales will go towards the CFDA Foundation, which raises funds charitable initiatives and campaigns on behalf of the American fashion industry's designers. I really wanted the Rachel Zoe one but by the time I was thinking about buying it two hours later it was sold out! I ended up buying the Mara Hoffman bracelet instead and just got it in the mail yesterday.

Mara Hoffman's personalized tech bracelet incorporates an original print from her Resort Swim 2014 collection. Inspired by the mythology and mysticism of India, the collection pays homage to classic Indian imagery. The 'tiger stripe' print featured on the bracelet includes Bengal tigers, a symbol of power and beauty, as well as crescent moons symbolizing rebirth and regeneration. The bracelet is manufactured by MOHZY and comes with an adapter for iPhone 5/5S/5C and 4/4S, which allows users to charge and transfer data from the iPhone or other devices, and is also compatible with iPods, Android smartphones and BlackBerry devices with a micro USB connector. (From E-bay's description)

I have already gotten compliments around the office about it and I'm going to be so excited to wear it around. How cool is it to always have a phone charger on your wrist? I will say it can't be plugged into a wall but if you are around a computer with a USB port you are good to go. Check out the other designs remaining and invest in a unique Christmas gift before they are SOLD OUT. BTW-they are $25.00 and that includes free shipping. Happy Holidays!

Crafts & Drafts/Jewelry-Kansas City

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

Hi readers!

I am a big fan of supporting local! In Kansas City we have a huge base of amazing artists right in our backyards so why not support them? I met a girl named Kira Terrey at a craft fair last weekend in Kansas City and loved her stuff. I wanted to walk around a bit more and come around for a few of her pieces. When I came back she was sold out of a few items so it pays to buy immediately at these things when you see something you like! (I don't think my husband would agree) I ended up buying the cloud necklace, and really love the originality of it, and the craftsmanship that went into making the piece. If you want to see her Etsy profile click here Kira Terrey Etsy.

The bracelet I bought from a different vendor but I didn't grab her business card :( I will say she was a super savvy business lady who was selling her jewelry, while holding her baby, and swiping my debit card at the same time. I had a blast walking around talking to the vendors and enjoying a 8-Bit Pale Ale from Tallgrass Brewing Company. Do any of my readers have any fun events they do in their towns to support local businesses?

HALLOWEEN 2013

Wednesday, October 30, 2013

Hi readers!

What are you going for as Halloween starts tomorrow? I went as Mother Nature for a few parties already and had a different reaction to a my costume. I had some random stranger at Mini Bar come up to me and tell me he didn't agree with my FAUX fur coat for my costume. I told him it wasn't real fur and that I didn't see what his problem was since FAUX fur is made out of fine acrylic fibers with no actual animal hair in it. To each their own I guess.. (BTW-I built my leaf head dress from Dollar Tree Silk Flowers if you were wondering and my dress is Laundry by Shelli Segal from 1/2 of 1/2 store)

SO I am thinking about wearing something else tomorrow to the other Halloween parties my friends are throwing. Here are a few pictures from my costume and a few fun pictures from an advertising party I went to with friends a couple of weeks ago. I will have a lot of nice posts coming up soon and have a ton of photo editing to work on tonight. Yea for large glasses of wine and watching Hocus Pocus on Netflix. Am I right? Be safe friends and have a fun Halloween tomorrow!

Below is the official event that I went to at Halls last week. I had such a fun time with my husband and look forward to more fashionable events in Kansas City. I hope you enjoy the photos from that night. I wore a BCBG pink silk dress, shoes were from Windor, and my purse is a vintage Dooney and Bourke leather bag.
